Saves Nine: Call to Craft Artists

Saves Nine is a group exhibition that sets out to be a cross-generational look at post-disciplinary craft, specifically as it is represented by the craft-based works of artists active in Manitoba today.
With the loosening of barriers within the art world and with the line in the sand between craft and art becoming fainter, this idea of post-disciplinarity has bled over into and started to loosen up the bounds within craft as well. This has given the creator more room to explore, experiment, and execute the work using a craft material, technique, or form as another one of their artistic mediums with which to conceptually address the themes in their work. Deeply steeped in traditions and histories – societal and personal – different crafts become excellent material to work with and address a whole range of themes, as has been seen internationally in a variety of projects and practices in recent history.
But what of this phenomenon’s history, development, and place within the context of Manitoba? What are the instances? Who are the purveyors? What is its lineage? What is the post-disciplinary craft of Manitoba? Saves Nine proposes to put forth some possible answers to these questions.
Following the efforts of Hovercraft; navigating the shorelines of art and craft, where craft-based practices of the under 35 set were explored, curator Kerri-Lynn Reeves is interested in looking at how craft-based art practices have developed and influenced each other over the years and the generations. Saves Nine proposes to be a small glimpse into the relationships, similarities, differences, and dynamics of art of this kind crafted by Manitobans.
If you are an artist working with craft techniques, materials, or forms in ways that transcend the traditional craft mode; if you work primarily with ideas and find what form best suits them; if you are actively working within Manitoba today; if you are between the ages of 16 and infinity, then the Manitoba Craft Council would like to hear from you.
Please send a short statement (approximately 200 words or less), your CV, and 10-15 images (no larger than 1GB each) to the Manitoba Craft Council (submissions@localhost:8888) Attn: Saves Nine.  Deadline for submission is Tuesday, November 13th by 4 PM.
