Functional Ceramics: Is there a next generation?

Drawing on her extensive research and preparation for the Women and the Flame exhibition of wood-fired ceramics slated to open at the Portage and District Arts Centre in 2013, Dr. Mary Ann Steggles’ presentation will focus on the question of “Is There a Next Generation?” Steggles has been investigating the current state of ceramics in Canada and will reflect on what appears to be a significant decline of interest in pursing a full-time career in functional ceramics. With the imminent retirement of so many highly-respected ceramic artists at Winnipeg’s Stoneware Gallery, the questions addressed in Steggles research weighs on the minds of all who love ceramics and value the long and rich legacy of functional ceramics in this province.
Dr. Mary Ann Steggles is Associate Director and Professor of Art History, School of Art, University of Manitoba. Steggles received her Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Leicester in 1992. She has been teaching and writing about art history since 1992.
