Call for Submissions ~ Craft on the Loose ~ July 16 – 23, 2013

If you would like to participate in Craft on the Loose 2013:
- By June 14, 2013 – please let us know by email that you plan to make a submission. Include your name, contact info, a description of what you are submitting, an image (if possible), what media you work with, and if you are inspired by a specific location.
- By July 8, 2013 – please drop off your piece at MCML and include any special exhibit requirements. Submit by email a brief description of your work for use on an interpretive label and a brief bio. Maximum 150 words.
Conditions of Acceptance to the Exhibit
- All pieces will be on loan to MCML for a three to four week duration, one week of exhibiting time, plus some installation and take-down time. Participants will be required to sign a loan agreement with MCML.
- All pieces must be available for the duration of the exhibit – July 16-23, 2013.
- Pieces must be received at MCML by July 8, 2013. Plan for a 15-20 minute visit at MCML for completing the necessary loan paperwork.
- All pieces will be available for pick up at MCML by July 29, 2013. All pieces must be picked up by August 15, 2013.
- The work will be displayed outdoors in a public space, so it will potentially be rained on, touched, damaged, added to, or stolen etc.
- MCML staff will check on the piece regularly throughout the exhibit. If a piece is damaged extensively or is no longer visually attractive, it will be removed.
Craft on the Loose is an outdoor community exhibit which features craft items on display on outdoor fixtures such as a benches, railings or concrete structures.
- Works will be solicited from the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library (MCML) membership and the broader craft community.
- The goal of the exhibit is to adorn the Millennium Library Park with works of craft, to celebrate local craft and craftspeople, and to publicise the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library.
- We will not accept: a) vulgar, racist or rude imagery, b) pieces that could injure visitors to the Millennium Library Park (glass, sharp metal, heavy pieces etc), or c) any item that hinders accessibility through the park.
- A piece can be made for a specific location in the Millennium Library Park (with some conditions). If you are making a work for a specific site, please consult with MCML staff to ensure a piece may be installed at that location. Specific locations are available on a first come, first served basis. Or pieces may be installed as deemed appropriate by the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library.
- Work may be installed on some bicycle racks, concrete pillars, park railings (except on stairs), benches, and some light poles. Works cannot be installed on any trees, in the pond, on any handrail that aids the use of a stairway, covering a light source or garbage receptacle, on the cube planters, on the three pieces of public art, or any structure with a planting bed in front. Reflective materials cannot be installed in locations visible by passing motorists.
