Do you work with textiles that have a focus on a form of narrative such as biography, fiction, memoir, or poetry?
If so, you should submit a pattern idea for Strange Material: Storytelling Through Textiles, a new book by Leanne Prain (author of Hoopla: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery and co-author of Yarn Bombing: The Art of Crochet and Knit Graffiti). Strange Material will be published by Arsenal Pulp Press in Fall 2014.
Strange Material: Storytelling Through Textiles will explore the relationship between handmade textiles and stories. Through the text, the act of weaving a tale or dropping a thread will take on new meaning for those who may have previously only seen textiles as functional objects. This book will encourage storytelling to leap off of the page and into the mediums of batik, stitching, dyeing, fabric painting, knitting, crochet, or weaving. The artists that will be featured in this book create narratives with a needle instead of a pen, dye rather than ink, weave in place of paper. Themed chapters will include fiction, poetry, wearable stories, manifestos, humor, pictorial stories, and humor.
There is no entry fee to submit a project idea, and designers are encouraged to submit multiple proposals. Please include your full name, complete contact information (email, telephone and mailing addresses) with your submission. The deadline for proposals May 30th, 2013.
Designers who are chosen to participate will receive reimbursement for the materials necessary to create their project, an honorarium, a free copy of the book, and credit for taking part in the book. Eight designers will be selected to be featured in the book.
How to Submit:
Designers who are interested in contributing are asked to submit:
- a sketch (digital or freehand) of the project
- a written description of how their finished project will look and the skills and materials involved to make the project

Please note: Patterns that are offered for sale elsewhere will not be considered. Designers must hold the copyright to their work.
The Timeline for Contributors
