For this installment of Flashback Friday, the archives have revealed the file of amazing glass artist Julia Reimer. In 2004 she received an Alberta Foundation for the Arts grant to assist with her solo show of architecturally-inspired blown glass at the former Manitoba Craft Council gallery.
When Julia Reimer discovered glass blowing at the Alberta College of Art + Design 1996, she discovered the main focus of her creative voice. She says, “I was always drawn to the muted luminescence of river ice on bright brisk days in winter. So when I had a chance to combine the essence of light, colour and movement with a material, it was a perfect fit.”
Reimer has a strong online presence and looking at the examples of her work showcases the dedication Julia has to her craft. Having had the pleasure of seeing her work in person I can testify to the luminosity and the beauty of her seemingly still liquid sculptures. She has traveled extensively taking whatever courses she could to hone her skills as she simultaneously explored what the medium of glass could offer her conceptually.
Reimer has received several awards and scholarships, such as the Canada Council for the Arts. She was an Artist in Residence at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York State in 2002 and in 2008 she received the first ever RBC and Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery national glass award. Her beautiful work is carried in several Canadian and U.S. galleries and has been shown in internationally.
Since completing her studies at ACAD in 2000, Reimer has a very active practice and now owns and operates Firebrand Glass Studio with her husband, Tyler Rock. They work independently in the studio but at times combine their considerable talents to collaborate on larger projects.
