This wall piece, number 4 in the countdown to the Backspace Forward juried exhibition submission deadline, is absolutely amazing! Using only the natural colour and texture variations of the sealskin and sinew for thread, the maker has created motifs that represent northern life: from igloos, to sled dogs, wildlife to human activities.
The back of this piece is almost as impressive as the front – from there you can see all the even whip stitches used to sew all the small pieces of hide together. The piece was made c. 1960s by the women of Killiniq (formerly Port Burwell), Nunavut.
