Gros Morne Craft Residency

The Craft Council is seeking proposals from professional craftspeople to lead one of two craft residencies planned for the Gros Morne Region during the Fall and Winter of 2014/2015. Here are the details:
A Gros Morne Craft Residency involves:
– a three – four week stay in the Gros Morne Region
– a two day workshop for craftspeople living in the region
– mentoring sessions with local craftspeople working in the region, maximum of twelve hours in total
– a day spent at a local school working with students
– an informal artist talk about you and your work, an afternoon or evening event early in the residency
– studio time spent developing your own work
– Wheels! – a vehicle is essential!

What the Craft Residency will provide to you:
– accommodation in Woody Point, including basic studio space, without equipment
– a residency stipend of $1,500
– artist fees of $440 per day for 6 days (2 day workshop, 2 days mentoring, 1 day school visit, 1 artist talk)
– a travel allowance for residency travel in the region, as well as assistance with travel to Gros Morne
– a local support person to assist with directions, supplies, etc.

What to send us to show you’re interested:
– a portfolio showing current work
– a current cv
– a statement of how the residency will contribute to the artistic development of your own work
– a description of the workshop that you propose to lead. Workshops that may have appeal for a wide audience will likely attract more attention. A workshop on incorporating colour from the natural world in your work, or developing cultural craft products based on local artefacts are two examples of sessions with a broader appeal. There has been local interest in a product development workshop aimed at the development of site specific craft products, inspired by local artefacts, icons and geographic features.
– an outline of a proposed art activity with school children in the area, with information about the preferred age group
– a description of how your background will enable you to mentor craftspeople in the region, and how you think your skills will benefit the development of their products and businesses
– your preferred dates for a 3 – 4 week residency period between November 17, 2014 and March 31, 2015
