Artist statement: this work is a meditation on the influences of my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In particular, I am seeking to better understand how my matriarchal lineage – their lives, their creative endeavours, and their strength – has shaped me: especially now, for the most awesome responsibility of being primary caregiver for my mom, Kay. All their creative (prairie) resources have equipped and now sustain me in our journey together through dementia – light and laughter, colour, land and sky, resilience, home. These influences are reflected in the new and recent work presented at the Manitoba Craft Council. They are offered in tribute and celebration of Minnie Porter, Matilda West, and Kay (West) Norberg.
Bio: Alison Norberg has been a practising fibre-based artist since 2002. Her work has been included in group exhibitions in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and her first solo exhibition (In Praise of Colour) was at the MCC Gallery in 2006. Alison served as President of the Manitoba Craft Council from 2008 to 2014, and was recognized as outstanding volunteer at the 2013 Winnipeg Arts Council Awards. Also actively involved with MAWA (Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art), she has participated in two MAWA mentorships – with Faye Havyshield in 2005, and Barb Hunt in 2011.
