Artist Statement
One of many things that attracts me to ceramics is using thick, rich, liquid clay. I like to paint. The process of applying a material in a spontaneous, painterly manner is delightful. For this series of dining plates, I’ve incorporated hand-pulled printed paintings of some of my favourite creatures. To create each image, various coloured slips are brushed, colour over colour, on a piece of newsprint. I’m intrigued how the image becomes increasingly obscure as the layers progress. Since the image gets squished when the painted newsprint is burnished onto the ceramic ware, pulling a monoprint is always an amusing surprise.
Bio
Kelli Rey holds a BFA Honours degree in Ceramics and a BEd from the University of Manitoba as well as diplomas in Graphic Design and Photography. Rey, an avid student, has taken ceramic courses at Red Deer College and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Kelli’s current studio practice, located in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District, is focused on functional and sculptural ceramics. Her work has been exhibited in Canada and the U.S. She has received numerous awards including several Manitoba Arts Council grants, the Marilyn Levitt award for Functional Pottery, and the One of a Kind Award for Excellence.
