artist statement
as a genderqueer femme whose multi-disciplinary work incorporates performance and textiles, i desire to make the practical more beautiful and art more accessible. my textile work covers knitwear design, natural dyeing and eco-printing, and an effort to document the slow process of my making with its instantaneous sharing on social media. i work with natural materials, using shed bones, antlers, leaves, flowers, bark, and compost to create colours and textures with yarn and fabric. my current collection, when nature fought back, is a mix of garments and accessories, inspired by a post-apocalyptic world where the natural world regains control.
bio
my mom taught me how to knit when i was a child. after several failed attempts to pick it back up again as i grew up, it finally stuck during my undergraduate degree in acting and gender studies at dalhousie university in halifax. i launched sunflower knit while doing my master’s in advanced theatre practice in london, uk, and learned how to dye with natural materials after returning to winnipeg. my first published pattern, double scoop, was the winning design for the 2014 manitoba fibre festival’s shawl knit-a-long design contest. i am a multi-disciplinary artist with an penchant for deconstruction.
