The Manitoba Craft Council and the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library are joining forces to create a new hub for craft in Manitoba. Located in an historic building at 329 Cumberland Ave, the 3,025 sq ft facility will include an exhibition gallery, shop, library, museum and programming space. Help us launch this amazing new facility with an exhibition featuring the best of contemporary and historical craft.
best, the inaugural exhibition, will include a juried component featuring (as the title suggests) the best of contemporary craft by Manitoba artists. Pieces from the MCML’s historic collection will be selected to complement the contemporary work and offer visitors a glimpse into the missions of both host organizations.
Rather than limit submissions with a theme, we are opening up the parameters for this juried show in order to access the highest calibre of work possible. This exhibition will set the tone for excellence in contemporary craft and will help position this new facility as the place to go for craft in Manitoba.
The exhibition will represent approximately fifteen Manitoba based craft artists whose work reflects the value of excellence in technique and concept. Works will be judged primarily on the basis of artistic merit, technical skill, formal effect, and conceptual success. Work that pushes the boundaries of its media and offers a fresh approach to cultural and material traditions are encouraged. Original works that encompass new technologies, are performative, reflect a d-i-y ethic, challenge preconceived notions of craft, or are deeply rooted in traditional approaches to craft are equally welcome.

Exhibition date
Renovations are beginning on MCC/MCML’s new joint facility in early 2016. We anticipate a June 2016 opening but are conscious that construction schedules rarely unfold exactly as hoped. Works submitted for consideration should be available for the period of June-Dec 2016 to account for any delays.
Eligible works
Works will be selected based on artistic merit, skill, design, and innovation. Original work (functional, decorative, conceptual) in any craft-based media are welcome (e.g.ceramic, fibre, metal, paper, recycled material, stone, glass and wood). In addition, mixed media and interdisciplinary works that are primarily craft-based in material and/or technique are welcome. Eligible works must have been completed after July 2013 and may not have been exhibited in previous MCC or MCML exhibitions. Senior and emerging artists are encourage to apply. Three entries per person, maximum. Entrants must be current Manitoba Craft Council or Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library members.
Images
The jurors will select work based on digital images with the final selection subject to viewing actual work. Applicants are encouraged to consider using a professional photographer to document your work. Please submit application by email. Use jpeg files with a resolution of 300 dpi, with images’ approx. 4 x 6 inches. For each work, submit one image with a full view of the work and one or two detail views. Please title each image file as follows: artist’s last name_title_full/detail (eg. Poirier_Moonscape_detail2) The maximum number of images allowed is nine (9).

1. Your name, mailing address, phone number and email address
2. Image list including the title, date, media, dimensions and price/value of each work submitted (3 works max.)
3. Artist statement (100 words max.)
All applicants will be notified of initial results by April 30, 2016. Final selection will be based on viewing the actual work. Artist fees will be paid for works selected for the exhibition.
