ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF JEWELLERY/METALS/ENAMEL

Basic Function
The School of Art at Kent State University seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position to head the Jewelry/Metals/Enameling program.
The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and will serve as advisor for Senior and Graduate Theses in the discipline. This position also includes the training and mentoring of graduate teaching assistants, lab technicians and general oversight of maintenance of a large and complex studio.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
A new faculty colleague will be expected to become a successful university citizen. This involves participating in committee work at all university levels, engaging with other schools, departments and programs within the School of Art to work collaboratively on university and/or research projects and, most importantly, by focusing on the advancement and success of our students.
Equally important is continued rigorous engagement in research and creative practice as evidenced through national and international dissemination.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates are required to have an MFA in studio art with a specialty in jewelry and metalsmithing. The candidate must demonstrate working knowledge of a wide variety of jewelry and metalsmithing processes. Proficiency in digital environments is necessary. Knowledge of craft and metals history within a broader context of art and culture is required as well as currency with contemporary issues and practices in the field and beyond.
Additional Minimum Qualifications – if applicable
The School of Art at KSU has a long focused history on the practices and technologies of enameling. The successful candidate must have a practicing (and teaching) knowledge of enameling and must be willing to oversee our unique large-scale enameling facility.
Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years’ full time teaching experience beyond the graduate assistantship as well as demonstrated professional achievement. Those possessing versatility, energy and collegiality and who are enthusiastic about participating in ongoing curricular transformation in order to address visual arts issues of the twenty-first century are especially sought.

Kent State University’s Jewelry/Metals/Enameling program enjoys a national and international reputation for excellence. It is located within the School of Art which offers study in a comprehensive range of studio disciplines, as well as art education and art history, at baccalaureate and master’s levels – its MFA is the only terminal visual arts degree in Northeastern Ohio. Additionally, regular travel-study classes to New York, Chicago, Florence, and China provide our students with first-hand immersion in larger art/design/craft world conversations, while annual Kent Blossom Art workshops invite visiting artists to lead intensive study for KSU and other students. All programs have recently relocated into a newly renovated, centrally-located Center for the Visual Arts, offering new opportunities for multidisciplinary synergies and new collaborations.
