The Residency
The crafts and design focused artist residency is to encourage contemporary artists and practitioners from all disciplines to connect with the traditional artisanship of Morocco to feed their creative practice. This month-long residency offers a unique opportunity to meet an extraordinary league of crafts and their makers, while gaining an exclusive understanding and insight into their daily lives and the techniques they use, as well as the workings of an ancient Moroccan medina.
The itinerary includes academic presentations, artisan connections, orientation visits and project support.Throughout the residency, contemporary practitioners will join forces with traditional skills and approaches of the traditional artisanship of urban and rural Morocco.
Calling artists
Designers and artists from a broad spectrum of practices are encouraged to apply. The outcome of the project will be showcased in collaboration with The French Institute, Fez; works maybe as wide-ranging as 3D object design to a performance piece.
The local artisanship and Culture Vultures
Culture Vultures has been working alongside the artisanship of the region of Fez and Sefrou for over 4 years and has built connections with craft-makers in both Fez city and Sefrou, where the artist’s lodgings are located. The portfolio ranges from metal workers to wood carvers/painters, tailors, carpet knotters, leather workers, potters, plaster carvers, cloth dyers and embroiderers and many more.
The residency focuses on cultural immersion and community engagement.
The town of Sefrou
30 kilometres from the imperial city of Fez, Sefrou is the chosen hosting town for an artist residence, as somewhere that offers the right balance of stimulation and yet space for contemplation and creativity. It is a humble market town that offers more insight the longer you reside and whose residents welcome and embrace Culture Vultures emerging, artist community. The guidebooks state only one or two sights and monuments if that……but we at C.V. now where the treasures lie. Our artist’s lodgings are in the heart of the old city which is woven into a multicultural tapestry.
The artists residencies are comprised of a traditional house and an apartment within a typical medina house, both in close proximity to each other and Culture Vultures Hub. Artists are allocated a large bedroom to themselves, access to a communal working kitchen, common areas to gather and socialize as well as private spaces to work and focus.

Includes.
- Comfortable accommodation in Sefrou medina.

Does not include
-Travel to / from Fez at either side of the residency, insurance or food.
- Execution or materials of artwork.
