One Trunk Theatre is building an itty-bitty pop up theatre/arts space this winter on the Red River Mutual Trail with support from The Forks and 5468796 Architecture. This Dollhouse of Commons will debut at the end of January and stay open to the public to visit until the ice melts!
The Dollhouse of Commons is an adorable miniature house, built to be a home for pop up art and performance in Winnipeg. This February it is free to book for concerts, performances, puppet shows, galleries, board meetings, art workshops, pop up shop, donut giveaways, poetry readings… you name it! YOU’RE INVITED to send us a proposal to use our tiny home on the ice for free! Our only restriction is that your work must be accessible and appropriate for any audience member who might skate or walk by.
This is an excellent opportunity to work in one of Canada’s most unique environments and showcase your work to the thousands of visitors who enjoy the trail in the winter months.
The house is 4’w x 8’l x 5-9’h. That’s 32 square feet only. The design is such that you can invite your audience INSIDE with you OR open one side of the house completely- creating a proscenium stage (think: removing the 4thwall) and perform to an audience that gathers outside. Alternatively, the house is equipped with windows and doors for audiences to peer through and watch a performance going on inside.**
Send us your proposal by January 21st and approved applications will be announced the following week and included in our program for February.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Please submit the following via e-mail to [email protected]
- Your name & brief bio (50-100 words max) include link to your website if applicable
- The title of your proposed activity (be creative)
- Your top three preferred dates/times in February to use the house
- How long you would like to book the house for (if you are doing performances we suggest short (5-10) minute shows that appeal to a drop in audience. For example rather than doing a 1 hour show, repeat the same 5 minute show multiple times in one hour)
- Write one paragraph proposal describing what you want to use the Dollhouse of Commons for (max 200 words).
** Note that the Dollhouse will have a few small furniture items (chairs, tables) inside. The house is NOT insulated and does not have power; however, we will have small solar powered lights inside for evening shows (limited brightness).
