One Million Stars to End Violence is a peaceful global weaving project that engages communities in a conversation about ending all forms of violence.
I started One Million Stars to End Violence in 2012 as my personal response to the rape and murder of a young woman in my community.
It was a difficult time for our community and I was moved by people’s kindness and compassion and by Dr Martin Luther King Jnr’s words of being light and love in the world. I sent a message out on Facebook and invited the world to join me in weaving stars with the hope of creating an installation of one million stars by 2018.
In February 2016, I partnered with the Queensland Government and together we are making this one million star installation dream a reality as part of the arts and cultural program during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Human Ventures is also on board, helping me to support individuals, groups and Star Weave Communities reach the goal of one millions stars.
I am travelling throughout the Commonwealth during 2016/2017 to conduct weaving workshops and connect with communities in the lead up to GC2018.
Part of the vision of the Commonwealth Games Federation is to build peaceful and sustainable communities globally, providing opportunities for communities to participate in the Games even if they can’t make it along to the sporting event. One Million Stars is the perfect way to be part of this event by weaving and submitting stars to be featured in the installation which will be amazing.
To me, one million stars represents how monumental the task of ending violence is and that everyone needs to participate to end all forms of violence. Each star represents a person’s commitment to practise light, hope, courage and solidarity and the one million star installation will be a peaceful statement against all forms of violence in our communities.
Anyone can get involved. Individuals, groups and communities are invited to host Star Weave Jams – gather your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues in your home, studio or workplace and weave together – to help achieve the one million star count by July 2017.
Together I believe we can create a peaceful society and I can’t wait to see everyone’s stars shine during GC2018.
