Exhibition Purpose
Toyama City is proud to announce the Toyama International Glass Exhibition 2018, a triennial international open-submission glass art exhibition. It is aimed at attracting the latest creations of contemporary glass art from all over the world and assessing their artistry. Toyama City has held the Contemporary Glass Triennial, with submissions limited to within Japan, four times between 2002 and 2011. Now expanding the submission to both national and international artists, the Toyama International Glass Exhibition 2018 will be held at the Toyama Glass Art Museum, which opened in 2015.

Toyama City has been working on the “Glass Art City, Toyama” project for over 30 years. This has included the establishment of the Toyama City Institute of Glass Art and the Toyama Glass Studio. In the final phase of the City’s long-time effort, the Toyama Glass Art Museum, designed by world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma, was built in downtown Toyama City. As a new symbol of the City, this museum is making great contributions to contemporary glass art promotion through its many exhibitions and events.
Within the field of contemporary glass art, a new movement, which viewed glass as a material with unique expressive potential, began in the Czech in the 1950s and in the United States in the 1960s. While this movement has matured over half a century, the expressive potential of glass continues to be unlimited and endures today.
Works selected for the Toyama International Glass Exhibition 2018 will demonstrate compelling ideas and unique material handlings. They will provide powerful and creative inspirations to young artists, and will showcase the continual advancement of contemporary glass art.
We hope this exhibition will provide an opportunity for contemporary glass art to further flourish all over the world, and will offer a new forum for the breadth of creative expression within the medium of glass in the 21st century.
