KINGS LANDING RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Be a part of the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design’s exciting second year of collaboration with Kings Landing Historical Settlement! Building on the success of our debut last year, we are pleased to once again offer artist residencies for the summer.
Whether an emerging, mid-career, or established artist, craftspeople at all stages of their career are invited to apply. We are committed to offering a welcoming, vibrant, creative atmosphere that strengthens the bonds of our artistic community. Successful applicants will be provided private studio space to work on their creative projects, in a communal environment. As part of this incredible opportunity, participants will have access to the beautiful historical village as well as the permanent collection during their stay. The NB Historical Archives’ Permanent Collection is a provincial gem and houses historical garments & textiles, furniture, tools, silverware, ceramics, baskets, and much more.
Applicants are encouraged to connect their project ideas to the inspiring living history museum that surrounds them and may choose to continue working on current pieces, develop new work, or use the time to explore and experiment. All craft and visual art media will be considered.
Residencies will be in Hoyt Place, beside the Kings Landing Welcome in Prince William, NB, and run from June 17 to October 8, 2019. Residencies are flexible and can be from 1 – 4 consecutive weeks, with new residents arriving on a Monday and leaving on a Sunday.
Residents are required to be in the studio for a minimum of 25 hours per week and are responsible for their own transportation to and from the location. Hours must be divided between 9am & 6pm daily. Accommodations are not available on site, however if you’re travelling there are local options for a place to stay (eg Riverside Resort and Conference Center, Air BnB, and Woolastook Park and Mactaquac Provincial Park for camping).
Most spaces are private rooms, with a shared textile studio if you need access to certain equipment (see application for equipment list). Multiple applicants can apply together if they’re willing to share a space. There is also a communal kitchen and separate dye kitchen.
There is an expected community engagement component to the residency, which entails being on-site for an Open House Day. Open Houses run every Saturday, and each resident is expected to be present for one Saturday for every 2 weeks of residency. It is up to the participants to make sure the house is well represented each week. If this is impossible, applicants may pitch another idea for community engagement that we’ll take into consideration.
Participants have the opportunity to give a pubic artist talk about their work, should they choose.
Artist-in-Residence also have the opportunity to submit work to a juried show in the MacBeath Hall Gallery at Kings Landing during the end of season exhibition.
