CraftED: Ceramic Cupcakes and Pendants with Julianna Zweirciadlowska-Rhymer
Workshop Description:
First Session – We will be handbuilding cupcakes, piping clay “icing” and using press molds to create delicious and decadent cupcakes. Make your own unique design, by the end of the first session you will have created a cupcake, possibly a second and/or a pendant. Molds will be provided and I will demonstrate how I create some of my detailed work.
All supplies will be provided. Wear clothing that can get dirty, bring an old towel or two to wipe up any mess.
Second Session – Your pieces will have been bisqued fired and we will be painting on underglaze and glaze onto your work.
After this is complete, I will be firing everyone’s work and it should be ready in the following few days. The MCC will contact participants when their work is ready to be picked up
Skill Level:
Some ceramic background is preferred, but not necessary. The workshop is suitable for beginners to advanced makers.
About the Instructor:
Julianna is an emerging artist from the Prairies of southern Manitoba. She received her first Bachelor of Fine Art in Art History from the University of Manitoba in 2011. After graduation, Julianna moved to Kraców, Poland to attend Jagiellonian University to study the Polish language and culture in order to more deeply understand her cultural background. Upon returning to Canada, Julianna moved to Vancouver, British Colombia and attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design, receiving her BFA (studio) in 2017. She began her Masters of Fine Art in 2019 and in June 2021 Julianna defended her thesis and graduated from the University of Manitoba.
Through the medium of ceramics her work explores the realities of food production, gluttony and ignorant consumption within the western world. Julianna uses the abject and the grotesque to create uncomfortable pieces about our consumption through a playful and curious lens. She creates luscious cake like sculptures which act as a vehicle to discuss more serious matters and pose challenging questions. Her work explores a side of consumption and excess that many of us would prefer to ignore, hide away from and pretend doesn’t exist.
