Craftivism: an Artist Talk with Adriana Alarcón
Tuesday, October 17, 2023 | 7pm
Adriana Alarcón, a maker, community organizer, and activist, Alarcón identifies as a craftivist. Alarcón describes craftivism as an urgent, passionate, and earnest practice—born from an ethos of having “the patience to stab something a thousand times with a small pointy object in order to make my point visible.” She emphasizes that the mindful, laborious, hand-made quality of her creations is only part of the practice. For her, collective empowerment is essential to craftivism. Throughout her talk, Alarcón will share stories from her own practice, as well as those of other contemporary craftivists and their communities, providing a lived definition of the term, and offering examples of exhibitions which have highlighted this practice.
