MCML Workshop: The Calm of Calligraphy Part II

Did the Calm of Calligraphy workshop (held at MCML in March 2024) spark your love for Copperplate Calligraphy and want more?  Do you have some knowledge of pointed pen calligraphy and want to brush up on your skills?

Join Janet Murata, professional Calligrapher, and the City of Winnipeg Maker in Residence and the Winnipeg Public Library for a relaxing, information-packed day of Copperplate Calligraphy.

She will review what was learned in The Calm of Calligraphy Part 1 (held in March 2024), and continue your journey of exploring this elegant hand.  We will work on connecting letters, create words, and phrases.  Students will be inspired to practice beyond the classroom, and elevate their skills to the next level.  We will complete a small project together.

Supply Fee Options

$10 – Workbook II and ink only (for those who have taken the workshop before)

$30 – Full supply kit with Workbook II, ink, plus nib, nib holder and ink container

Pre-requisite Skills: 
1. Have taken a pointed pen class previously (with  Janet or another instructor) OR have self – taught skills of using a pointed
pen and dip pen. ie. how to dip and hold pen, can create shades and hairlines, and problems solve issues with using dip pen and ink.
2. Have previously been introduced to the concepts and shapes of Copperplate letterforms.

Please bring a pencil, eraser and ruler to the workshop.

About the Instructor – Janet Murata

A nurse, turned artist and calligrapher, Janet has a deep connection to the planet. She gains inspiration to live and create through various outdoor activities ie. hiking, backcountry camping, running, triathlons, napping, gardening. Her home base is in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Janet has been a member of the Calligrapher’s Guild of Manitoba since 2010. She loves sharing her passion for and knowledge of calligraphy. She has taught calligraphy and painting classes in many forms. She believes that stepping back communication through technology, and toward the handwritten word, and calligraphy, can be therapeutic. A way for us to slow down our bodies and minds, reconnect with ourselves and each other.
