MCML Workshop: Embroidery & Design

Embroidery & Design Workshop: Creating Effective Compositions and Precise Stitching on Twill

Saturday April 5, 2025 | 12pm – 4pm

Duration: 4 hours
Skill Level: Intermediate and above

This workshop is designed for embroidery enthusiasts looking to elevate their skills in composition and precision. Rather than focusing on learning different stitches, we will explore techniques for crafting dynamic compositions during the first 2 hours. In the second half, participants will translate their designs onto finely woven black twill fabric, practicing meticulous stitching along pre-drawn lines.

Unlike the gridded structure of aida fabric used for cross-stitching, twill’s smooth and subtle weave requires greater focus to maintain precision and uniformity, making it ideal for intricate and detailed designs. While you may not complete your project within the 4-hour session, this workshop offers a unique introduction to the techniques and approach of Iwasaki’s embroidery practice.

About the Instructor – Takashi Iwasaki

Born in Japan in 1982, Iwasaki has made Winnipeg his home since 2002. His diverse practice spans painting, embroidery, woodworking, and large-scale public art, each medium reflecting a unique facet of his creative vision. In 2022, during his Master of Fine Arts studies at the University of Manitoba, Iwasaki discovered clay, drawn to its distinctive malleability and tactile quality. This newfound medium has opened fresh avenues for him to express his worldview. Currently, he is focused on creating immersive environments that harmonize his varied media, allowing each piece to tell its own story while contributing to a cohesive, atmospheric experience. At the heart of Iwasaki’s work is a desire to capture and share moments of joy.
