A COMMEMORATIVE EXHIBITION for REMEMBRANCE EVERY DAY
Every November 11, we honour the sacrifices our veterans made to save democracy and our Canadian way of life. It’s up to us to protect that legacy. As a clay, glass or vitreous enamel artist, you now have a unique opportunity to do that.
The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery (Waterloo, Ontario) invites clay, glass and vitreous enamel artists from across Canada to submit a proposal for a small work (maximum 45 x 30 x 30 cm) for an exhibition commemorating Remembrance Day, November 11, 80 years since the end of World War II. The exhibition will be held in our Gordon Barnes Gallery in the Fall 2025.
Your proposal should examine issues around peace, war (any conflicts in the world including civil wars), Remembrance Day and its commemoration. Topics may include, but not limited to,
– The poem by John McCrae: In Flanders Field
– Remembrance Day commemoration
– Impact of war on families
– Canadian Peacekeeping missions (since 1956)
– Community impact
– Genocides
– Heroes
– Any other topics relating to Remembrance Day.
Selected artists will receive CARFAC exhibition fees, as well as funds to support their community project; and shipping and insurance will be covered. During the exhibition, all visitors will be invited to vote for their favourite work, and the People Choice Award winner will receive $1000. A draw will then take place among all the visitors who cast a ballot, and the raffle winner will receive a $200 gift
certificate for our gift shop (also valid in our online shop). AND A COMMEMORATIVE COMMUNITY PROJECT AND INSTALLATION
The 25 selected artists must also be prepared to run poppy making workshops in their community to create a significant installation at a location of their choice, such as their City or Town Hall, or their community centre. The installation is to draw attention to Remembrance Day and to raise funds for the local Legions. Workshops will be run during the Summer, and all poppies will be installed starting early in September. Workshops should wrap up late August. Photos of local installations of Remembrance Gardens of Poppies will be sent to the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery and posted on their Remembrance Day website page. The poppies will be available to the public starting on November 12 in exchange for donations and the proceeds will go entirely to local Legions. The goal is to honour the fallen and equally, to sensitize the population at large on the relevance of Remembrance Day, every day in the world we now live in. The expectation is to have at least 26 community installations of Remembrance Garden of Poppies across Canada.
Timeline:
March 2025: posting for the call for proposals for the exhibition. The call also mentions the community project.
May 21st: Deadline to submit a proposal
May 30: Project selected and organization of the exhibition. Confirmation sent to the selected artists.
May-August: Organization of the exhibition and accompanying publication. Planning of a “Public Choice Award” to invite visitors to select their favourite piece in the exhibition. Press Release on the community national project and poppies making workshops.
June-August: workshops all across Canada to make poppies in clay, glass or vitreous enamels.
September: Opening reception for the exhibition, special VIP event. Official installation of the first elements of the Garden of Poppies at The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in the lobby corridor or at City Hall, or another public building if that is possible.
November 11: Special Remembrance Day Commemoration event, ideally at all locations.
November 12: Poppies are available to the public in exchange for donations. The proceeds to go to local Legion Branch Poppy Funds. All poppies should have been removed from their location by November 30.
November 30: Launch of the book. Book sales proceeds to go to the Legion.

Your proposal should include:
– 250-word proposal
– 150-word biography
– How many workshops you are planning to hold and where the installation will be presented
– Resume or CV
– 2 to 5 images of current work
– Additional materials: drawing of the proposed work for the exhibition for example
