Called Reticella, this Italian technique is a form of needle lace created circa the 15th century that evolved into the 17th century. Depending on the level of work, several threads are drawn out of fabric and the remaining spaces are filled with needle lace stitches. The remaining ground is a very rigid grid. Accordingly reticella is relatively easy to identify, as the designs, based on the remaining threads in the fabric, are predominately geometric with numerous decorative squares.
