Mary Ann Steggles

  • Mixed Media

Mary Ann Steggles is a maker, writer, and curator.  She studied ceramics at Sheridan College with John Reeve and with Paul Soldner at his studio in Aspen, Colorado.  For more than two decades, she ran Maple Grove Pottery in Graysville, Manitoba where she produced salt fired domestic ware and raku. During this time she won numerous Manitoba Arts Council grants including a ‘B’ grant.  She was one of the first eleven artists chosen to be part of the Manitoba Arts Council’s Artist in the School’s Programme and was artist in residence for the Department of Cultural Affairs for the Central Region of Manitoba.  After receiving her PhD in the UK, she taught at Bishop’s University and Acadia University.  She is currently a Professor at the School of Art, University of Manitoba.

She was an Interdisciplinary Arts Resident of Hospitalfield House in Arbroath, Scotland in 2019.   Her work focused on the transience of life and the impact of ceramics on the environment.  Her current work uses the layering of slip and its removal as she continues the theme of the passage of time.
Her writing appears in Studio Potter, Ceramics Art and Perception, Ceramics Technical, Neue Keramik, and Ceramics Monthly.  She is a regular columnist for Toplerflatt.
You can find more of her work at the C2 online shop here.
