Belt

Before the arrival of Europeans and their glass beads, Aboriginal people in Canada often created decorated panels like this using porcupine quills. The hollow quills can be easily flattened and dyed using natural dyes. Belts such as this one are woven on a bow loom. This belt was made by a Dene woman, likely from the Northern area of Manitoba or Saskatchewan.
