Mat – Carrickmacross
This delicate table mat or doily is an example of carrickmacross, a form of appliqué. The pattern would have been first drawn in ink or a glazed linen or card material. This example shows some cut work in the larger flowers, leaves and ground areas. Various areas of bridges or bars, worked in buttonhole stitch provide further interest. Carrickmacross lace continues to be popular, it was on Kate Middleton’s wedding gown!
