Welcome home!! The Manitoba Crafts Council 2010 Juried Exhibition has the theme of “HOME” in recognition of the Manitoba Homecoming 2010 initiative intended to celebrate this province’s diverse cultures and traditions. Artists were invited to explore the full scope of meanings and associations connected to this small but weighty word. Historically, craft is rooted in utilitarian and decorative functional items for the home. Those roots are reflected in fresh, surprising, innovative and unusal ways in the hands of makers whose works were selected by the jury for this exhibition.
We are deeply appreciative of the enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of this year’s jurors: Michael Boss, visual artist and art educator, Director of Studio Programs, Winnipeg Art Gallery; Wesley Smith, Assistant Professor, Ceramics, University of North Dakota; and Ione Thorkelsson, RCA, glass sculptor.
Collectively and individually, the works in “HOME” are strong evidence of a vibrant and dynamic contemporary fine craft scene in Manitoba. We are pleased to be able to share this work so widely, with the assistance of St. Norbert Arts Centre, Wasagaming Community Arts, and the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of University of Brandon. MCC thanks staff and volunteers at each of these venues for your welcome.
MCC is also grateful for the support and contributions of: the Manitoba Arts Council for funding assistance for this exhibition and the ongoing support of the Arts Branch of the Province of Manitoba; trustees of the Judith Ryan Memorial Award (for Best in Show) and the Marilyn Wolodarsky Levitt Prize (for Functional Pottery); Bruce Spielman, for photography; Marcelle Lussier and colleagues at Urban Ink Design; Cre8ery Gallery, for use of their plinths; and MCC volunteers who have helped with various tasks. Finally, we extend a big round of applause and heartfelt thanks to Tammy Sutherland, MCC Programme Coordinator, who pulled everything together.
