The Manitoba Craft Council’s 2011 juried exhibition Make. Stop. Repeat. opening on Thursday, June 23, 2011 was a great success!  MCC member Karen Schlichting unveiled her newly completed piece, Gretel’s Oven, at the opening reception, where craft, crust and crumb converged as Karen shared a little of her brick, concrete and glass creation and over 40 pizzas with MCC members and friends.
Make. Stop. Repeat. is a knock’em out fight with the idea and practice of repetition, accumulation, and multiples as it relates to craft in particular, but also more broadly.  Spanning an array of media and techniques and created by artists at varying stages in their careers, every piece in this exhibition speaks to the theme in unique and sometimes surprising ways.
An artist talk with Thompson, Manitoba artist Teresa Burrows was held on August 25, 2011.  Teresa Burrows has been garnering critical attention on a national and international level not only for the elaborate and stunning beadwork in her mixed media installation pieces but for the challenging subject matter her work addresses.  Reflecting on issues related to colonization and the fur trade in past work, Burrows – a former addictions counselor and probation officer amongst other things – has now turned her attention to Manitoba’s missing and murdered women.

Teresa Burrows of Thompson, MB was awarded the Judith Ryan Memorial award for best in show for her ambitious piece “Beavers Burden”.  Crystal Nykoluk of Anola, MB was awarded the Marilyn Wolodarsky Levitt prize for best in functional ceramics.
