Art Quilts XVIII: ARTrageous Art Quilts

A Call to Artists for original works of textile Art Quilts that step outside of the box in some context, reflecting a twist on the traditional, an interesting technique that is unique to your work, or simply something that is so extremely bold, that your colleagues will exclaim, “what!?!” The challenge is to move beyond any traditional style, context or subject that you have relied on in the past, or to take your traditional context and mix it up in a way that is beyond being bold. Outrageous: exceeding the limits of what is usual.
ARTIST CALL: Art Quilts XVIII: ARTrageous Art Quilts, an exhibition to be held at the Chandler Center for the Arts. To submit work for consideration, please follow the entry requirements below:

Art Quilts XVIII: ARTrageous Art Quilts
This year’s theme encourages you to explore beyond the scope of the normal. What are the most important themes happening your work? Are they subjected to enough of your own scrutiny? Can you take a theme that seems to run rampant in your work and twist it just so slightly? Can you look formidably at your body of work and see the trends of expression you seem to rely on for comfort?  How easily can you examine your own “context” and allow yourself as an artist to step outside and look inward? Our examination of the extent of our creative expression is the key. How do we see humor in our replication of “traditional themes and contexts?” Can we look for the key that will unlock the door to stepping “out of bounds” with the messages we are trying to express? Ah, this year will be ARTrageous!
Submit your most significant work to this annual exhibition of contemporary artworks, showcasing one of the finest collections of art quilts on display in the regional Southwest.
The exhibition is produced by the Chandler Center for the Arts and is presented by the Chandler Cultural Foundation and the Chandler Arts Commission.
The Chandler Center for the Arts Art Quilts exhibition has grown from a local and regional quilt show to a respected vehicle for contemporary works. The exhibition draws entries from around the United States and Canada and allows thousands of visitors each year to experience quilting as an art form. Our juror is Arizona artist Laurie Fagen.
Juror Laurie Fagen, Biography & Statement
Laurie Fagen of Fagen Designs is an award-winning fiber artist who “paints with fabric” to design and create original contemporary wall art and wearable art, which includes metal and polymer clay jewelry. In addition to teaching and speaking about contemporary art quilting, she is former owner of Art on Boston Gallery, and still promotes fine art and fine artists online at www.ArtOnlineAZ.com.
Fagen currently has work at the TCArt Shop at the Tempe Center for the Arts; at Textiles and Textures in Prescott; and in private collections across the country. Her public art commissions include at the City of Phoenix Ironwood Branch Library.
Currently chair of the Chandler Arts Commission, Fagen is also a member of the Mavericks, a chapter of the Arizona Quilters Guild and Fiber Connection.
Her website is www.FagenDesigns.com.
“I am thrilled to be selected as juror for this year’s Art Quilts show, and look forward to seeing ‘ARTrageous’ work from some of our best art quilters. Fiber art is finally receiving the recognition it has so long deserved as a strong, viable and exciting art form, and I’m pleased to be working on this terrific show.
“The Chandler Center for the Arts annual Art Quilts display is one of the strongest and largest in the area, where thousands come each year to enjoy the artwork. This year will be no different, and I can’t wait to see your latest pieces!”
Juror’s Exhibition Theme: ARTrageous Art Quilts
Using any of the various techniques and materials of the Art Quilt medium, create a work to express a new twist on your collective body of work. The theme you choose may be conceptual, visual, or personal. For example:
·    Art often steps beyond the boundaries of comfort…
·    Design elements can be modified to create new ideas, patterns or concepts…
·    Life is filled with opportunities to see the brighter side of ourselves and our work. Find inspiration in the bizarre, the outlandish or just the silliness of taking oneself too seriously.
