Neurocraft Collaboration

Call for expressions of interest
Neurocraft Collaboration
The Manitoba Craft Council and the Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience are partnering on phase 2 of an innovative pilot project that will match 3-5 craft artists with neuroscience researchers to create works inspired by the brain.
The Winnipeg Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience is a non-profit organization that represents neuroscientists working in Winnipeg. Their mission is, in part, to increase neuroscience awareness in the community. Their members work on a wide variety of topics and themes that may be of interest to makers: sensory perception, diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or multiple sclerosis, mental illness, spinal cord injury, or even just the unique functions and beauty of the brain when seen through a microscope.
While pairing neuroscience and art/craft may seem unusual, there have been several such partnerships over the last several years including ones at the links below:

Craft artists will be matched with a neuroscience researcher based on compatibility of interests. Each pairing will be responsible to arrange meeting times and work out the details of their collaboration. Ideally, some of the early resulting works will be displayed at the U of M’s Bannatyne campus during their annual celebration of Brain Awareness Week in March 2016.  A fuller exhibition of work from the first and second rounds of this project is being planned for later in 2016, curated by Seema Goel.
To apply, please provide the following:

  1. CV and artist statement. (3 page max, combined)
  2. 3-5 digital images of your recent work.
  3. A short letter outlining why you are interested in participating in this projectThis call is open to members of the Manitoba Craft Council. Expressions of interest may be sent to submissions@localhost:8888, with “Neuroscience-your name” in the subject line by September 11, 2015.
