Exhibition Application FAQs
Who or what is M16 Artspace?
We are a community-based art organisation, which has existed in several forms and locations in Canberra since 1985. We are now housed in the Blaxland Centre, 21 Blaxland Crescent, Griffith, aka the old Griffith Public Library. Our organisation comprises 28 artist studios, 3 galleries and ‘Chutespace’, located in the old book return chute.  We are also home to several artist workshops and a workspace for temporary hire.
Through our gallery program we aim to present high-quality exhibitions from both emerging and established artists and curators from Canberra, interstate and overseas. We are partly supported by the ACT Government for running our gallery program.
How long do exhibitions last?
We have 15 blocks of exhibitions each lasting 3 weeks. Each opening night covers 3 exhibitions.
What are the gallery hire fees for 2017?
Gallery 1 $2,250 for 3 weeks.
Gallery 2 $1,050 for 3 weeks.
Gallery 3 $1,050  for 3 weeks.
Half of Gallery 1 $1,500 for 3 weeks
What does that cover?
Our fees cover the hire of the space for 3 weeks, design and printing of invitations, media release editing and distribution, social media, website and email promotion, curatorial assistance, lighting and currently an open bar with beer, wine and chilled water on opening night. We also manage sales, and take 30% commission.
What is the exhibitor responsible for?
Exhibitors are responsible for the installation and de-installation of their exhibition (including the repair of walls where needed), food on opening night, and for sitting the gallery on one of the three weekends for the duration of the exhibition.
How big are the galleries? Is there lighting? What about the walls?
Gallery 1 measures 189m2, and has wooden floors and plywood walls covered with plasterboard. There is some natural lighting, but also track and fluorescent lighting. Wall heights vary between 2.7 and 3.8 metres. There are also there are also three movable walls in the space, each 3m x 2.5m (h) x 0.6m.
Gallery 2 is 29m2, with three brick and one MDF wall. There is a track hanging system on the 3 brick walls. This gallery has track lighting but no natural light, making it ideal for projected or screen-based works. There is a digital projector and large screen available.
Gallery 3 comprises a 21.8 metre wall in a corridor. The wall is 2.7 metres high, and has track lighting along the entire length.
What is the exhibition selection process?
Applications are initially assessed by the Exhibitions and Promotions Coordinator, and then by a committee comprised of Board Members of M16 Artspace to ensure transparency and fairness. Selections are made on the merit demonstrated by the quality of the application, and in consideration of the balance of our whole program.
How will I know if my application has been successful?
All applicants, whether successful or unsuccessful, will be notified of the result of their application by Thursday, 23rd of June 2016 via email.
