Smocking Workshop

Create your own handmade elastic with smocking! Smocking is an embroidery technique that gathers fabric so that it can stretch and was used widely before elastic was available. This workshop will provide an introduction to various smocking techniques.

Meet your instructor:

Claire Sparling is a local textile artist specializing in historical pattern drafting and clothing. Having started to learn to work with fibres at a very young age, Claire has worked with various textile techniques including sewing, weaving, embroidery, lace making, smocking, and so much more! She mostly works from her own shop, but has also drafted and sewn for local theatres, most recently the RWB (The Wizard of Oz) and the PTE (Munchtopya). She has studied with a master tailor, a master weaver, and a master embroiderer, sharing knowledge in order to keep these textile arts alive.
