Masks & Makers Online Fundraising Auction

August 2020

Deadline to register: July 20, 2020 (Extended!)

Deadline to submit artwork: July 25, 2020

The mask has become an emblem of the strange and difficult times we’re living in. As we navigate our way through this coronavirus pandemic, craftspeople have been called upon to sew masks to protect themselves and their communities. A symbol of caution and care, the mask, with its ability to both conceal and reveal, is fertile ground for the artist’s imagination.

Manitoba Craft Council invites you to submit a mask to our online fundraising auction slated for August 2020. We encourage you to play with and explore the idea of mask in whatever way inspires and intrigues you. Proceeds from the sale of donated artworks will support craft and craftspeople in Manitoba through innovative programming at the Manitoba Craft Council.

How will the auction work?

All submissions will be photographed and uploaded to an online auction platform.  Submissions will be divided into 3 auction lots. Each lot will be available online for public viewing and bidding for one week. At the auction lot’s close, the highest bidder for each item will be the winner. The auction lot close dates are: August 7, 21 & September 4, 2020 at 9 pm.

Will any of the proceeds go directly to the craftspeople and artists who made the work?

Anyone submitting work to this auction will be asked to indicate what percentage of the sale of their artwork they wish to donate to the MCC: 50%, 75% or 100%. Artists will be paid within 6 weeks of the sale of their artwork at auction. Artists will be asked to set a minimum bid for their work (50% of the work’s retail value is a good starting point). Any unsold work will be returned to the artist at the close of the auction.
