The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba seeks a creative thinker who can boldly imagine our programming at a time of unprecedented societal upheaval – to serve as our Curator.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Curator is responsible for developing and producing contemporary art exhibitions, both virtual and on-site with related publications. Working collaboratively with core staff to provide challenging public programs and effective communications strategies, the curator inspires, innovates and embraces change.

Our successful candidate will approach all programming as an agent of change, acting with integrity yet willing to accept risks. Honouring our current strengths as a cultural landmark in Western Manitoba, the curator offers creative opportunities that strive towards innovative understanding of art and our environment. They will be asked to actively engage community groups and members through reciprocal exchange with the purpose of developing and maintaining long-term relationships.

 

Duties include

• Coordinating and managing approximately 6 – 8 Main Gallery exhibitions per year and approximately 10 Community Gallery exhibitions (with guidance from the Executive Director)

• Curating a major exhibition per year

• Undertake exhibition(s) research

• Oversee the production of all exhibition related materials, including brochures for each Main Gallery or virtual exhibition.

• Seeking and applying for project specific funding and sponsorships for exhibitions and programs

• Assisting Executive Director with operating grant applications

• Coordinate adjunct programming and events alongside the Art Educator

• Create and actively disseminate promotional material related to exhibitions and events

• Works with the Facility Manager to ensure proper care, maintenance, conservation and management of the AGSM’s Collection.

• Monitors public access to Gallery exhibition spaces, ensuring that masking, distancing, or other mandated health guidelines are enforced.

• Actively engaging relevant community groups and members of the regional arts milieu

• Assists the Facility Manager to insure that all public exhibitions are professionally mounted; works of art are registered, prepared, and maintained; conservation responsibilities are handled and related administrative/record keeping responsibilities are undertaken.

 

Qualifications

• An advance degree in a relevant discipline (including Art History, Visual Studies, Curatorial Studies, etc.)

• Three years of related experience.

• An active and demonstrated interest in and knowledge of contemporary art, community-based arts practices, Indigenous art, and the dynamics of prairie arts communities

• Strong project management, writing, communication, and interpersonal skills

• An eagerness to learn and innovate

• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently

• Experience with art handling procedures for two and three dimensional objects; mounting and hanging artworks

• Excellent organizational skills, time-management skills and orientation to detail

• General computer literacy with ability to work in digital environments including G-Suite (Google Docs, Drive, and Calendar)
