Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library

 Research Assistant

16 weeks: May 18, 2021 to September 4, 2021.

$13.75 per hour for a 35 hour week.

All work will take place at 1-329 Cumberland Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 1T2

The Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library is a dynamic small museum with a focus on craft.   MCML is located in the C2 Centre for Craft, a facility shared with the Manitoba Craft Council. As such is it an exciting venue for those interested in craft and art, as it features both historic and contemporary work.  The MCML collection is one of the oldest in Manitoba, having been established in the early 1930s.   It now houses over 11,000 hand crafted items, craft related archival holdings, and craft tools.  Through our collections, MCML interprets the rich craft history of Manitoba.

The Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library seeks a motivated and enthusiastic individual to work on research and public content development for approximately 400 BIPOC collections items in the MCML collection.  This will include research on the history of the items, and the development of social media posts, blogs, short videos and photograph captions, all for publishing on-line. MCML is a supportive workplace that values its employees, and provides a quality work and learning experience to student employees.

The student will also be responsible for visitor services and shop staffing in the absence of the Curator and other staff.  The student will perform light janitorial and maintenance in the gallery.

 Educational Qualifications

Post Secondary student in Museum Studies, Archival Studies, History / Art History, School of Art or Creative Communications or related field. Priority will be given to senior students (4th year undergraduate or higher preferred).

Due to the nature of the project, with a focus on BIPOC content, priority will also be given to students who identify as part of this demographic.

We are seeking a student who is enthusiastic, creative, reliable, and interested in art/craft/history.

– Excellent research skills, prior knowledge of collections an asset

– Digital photography and/or video skills

– Excellent computer skills

– Experience with websites

– Experience in museum or archives setting an asset

– Excellent interpersonal skills

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills

– Comfortable working with the general public

– Ability to work independently

– Good attention to detail

– Demonstrated organizational and time management skills

This project is funded through Young Canada Works. Candidates must verify that they meet all the requirements before they are offered an interview:

– be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada.

– be legally entitled to work in Canada.

– be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.

– have finished the school term at the start of employment.

-not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW.
