Expression of Interest: Digital Craft Workshop Instructors

Craft is a slow process that is best understood through participation. The Manitoba Craft Council aims to promote and advocate for fine craft and its makers in Manitoba, and we are excited to be offering high quality, craft-based workshops to the public at C2.

The Manitoba Craft Council is seeking expressions of interest from professional craft artists who wish to offer digital mini-workshops online via zoom. 

These workshops are designed to increase access to workshops and programming for MCC members who live in rural areas or otherwise have barriers to accessing in-person programming at the C2 Centre for Craft in Winnipeg. All members of the public are welcome to register and attend these workshops. 

 

All candidates should:

– have extensive knowledge, training and technical ability in their craft medium

– be effective communicators with demonstrated teaching experience

– be passionate about sharing their knowledge and craft skills
– Experience teaching digital workshops is an asset

– Instructor will need two cameras (laptop webcam, webcams and phones are acceptable) to allow for one camera showing the instructor front-on with their face, and one camera focused on their hands

– Have a general skill level with technology to comfortably and independently use video conferencing software (zoom) to lead the workshop, and to set up multiple cameras as outlined above with minimal supervision and/or training. 

 

Proposed digital mini-workshops:

– be in a fine craft medium: ceramics, metal, textiles, books, paper, glass, wood, leather, etc

– focus on techniques that: align with best practices in media of choice; transfer well to an online teaching platform; and allow students to clearly see and understand the techniques being shown

– show a clear plan for teaching basic skills in a digital group settings

– focus on introductory techniques and projects that can be completed without one-on-one attention from instructor

– centre around transferable skill-building rather than stand-alone, templated projects

 

Payment and expectations:

– fee paid to instructor: $335

– 2 hour workshop, online

– instructors must prepare and mail supply kits to participants (Manitoba only) a minimum of 2 weeks prior to workshop date

– 20 participant maximum

– supply and shipping costs as indicated in contract will be reimbursed to instructor

– instructors will use Zoom to provide workshop, and an MCC staff member will be digitally present to assist in facilitating, letting in participants, dealing with tech issues among participants, etc. 

– instructor will need two cameras (laptop camera, webcams and phones are acceptable) to allow for one camera showing the instructor’s face and one camera focused on their hands

– The MCC will schedule a private technology run-through in advance of the session

– Please note: MCC does not record Zoom workshop sessions and they will not be distributed or published online.

 

Interested applicants must provide:

– Name, contact Information and media of expertise

– Artistic CV or a resume highlighting your professional exhibition and/or teaching background

– An outline/plan for your workshop

– Their level of comfort and experience working with video conferencing software

– A list of supplies and per student cost of supplies

– Cost of shipping supplies to registrants within Manitoba per person

– 5-10 images of your work (Please name images NumberFirstName, example: 01JohnDoe, 02JohnDoe. Please only include images that related to the techniques and materials used in proposed workshop)

-Image information: if applicable, materials and techniques used, date completed, etc

-Some availability on evenings or weekends in February, March or April 2023
