Representation in the MCML Collection

The Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library recognizes that our collection does not reflect the amazing diversity of Manitoba.

As first step toward making our collection more representative, we are dedicating all donations made to MCML in June 2023 to the purchase of new works for the collection that represent artists from equity seeking groups.  Our goal is to purchase works by contemporary artists, and possibly some older pieces, that will grow the collection with respect to artists who are BIPOC, LGBTQ2+A and/or disabled.

MCML is starting the initiative with a contribution of $2,500!  The seed funding for our acquisition initiative is from a bequest from former MCML member, Delza Longman.  Delza was a rug hooker primarily, but was also a weaver, knitter and embroiderer. She was passionate about people and committed to equality and non-discrimination.  We know that she would be proud that some of her generous contribution to MCML will be used to build the collection so that it better represents the diversity of artists in our community.

Our goal is to double the seed money, so that we have $5,000 to spend!  But if we exceed the goal, that’s ok too. It just means we can add even more to the collection.

To showcase the works that we add to the collection this year, MCML will curate an exhibit in 2024 in the Heritage Gallery that includes every piece, with information about the artists.

Please join us in this exciting initiative!
