Craft + Craft Beer: Gothic Calligraphy with Janet Murata at Sookram’s Brewing Co

Workshop Description:
Join the Manitoba Craft Council and Sookram’s Brewing Co for Craft + Craft Beer!
Step into the bold beauty of Gothic calligraphy in this relaxed, in-person workshop. Over the course of three hours, you’ll learn the fundamentals of Gothic (Blackletter) script—from mastering pen angles and pressure to forming striking letter shapes with rhythmic precision. No prior experience is required. Participants will be guided through warm-up drills, given worksheets that show lowercase and uppercase letter forms, and learn to script out letters and word compositions. You will leave with a personalized piece of your own Gothic lettering— perfect for framing, gifting, or just showing off your new skill over a fresh pour.
About the Instructor:
Janet Murata is a professional calligrapher and artist in Winnipeg, Treaty 1 territory, that weaves her connection to the land as an integral part of her work. Notable professional achievements include acting as a 2024 City of Winnipeg Maker in Residence at the Winnipeg Public Library, creating a document for the Manitoba Metis Federation, signed and blessed by the Pope, and government dignitaries, working toward truth and reconciliation. She has an extensive list of teaching and event engagements from private classes with young artists, to corporate wellness workshops for hundreds of adults.

- Includes all materials: calligraphy pen, walnut ink, inkwell, guide sheets, and calligraphy paper (yours to keep), and a take-home handout with tips for continued practice
- Includes a flight of beer from Sookram’s
