CraftED: Coptic Bookbinding with Wooden Covers with Debra Frances

CraftED: Coptic Bookbinding with Wooden Covers with Debra Frances

Workshop Description:

Dating back to the 2nd century, Coptic binding originated from interlaced thread techniques used in carpet making. Early binders employed a distinctive herringbone chain stitch to sew papyrus and later parchment between wooden covers. The result is a flexible yet remarkably durable book that opens completely flat, making it ideal for writing, sketching, journaling, or displaying images.

In this two-session workshop, participants will create two Coptic-bound books with wooden covers using the paired-station sewing method. We will begin with a smaller, two-hole binding to learn and practice the sewing  pattern, then progress to a larger, four-hole book to expand your skills and confidence.

Wood is one of the most versatile and expressive materials for personalizing your book. Demonstrations will include wood burning, wood etching and creating inlays and tools will be available for participants who wish to embellish their covers with custom designs.

No prior bookbinding experience is necessary. Beginners are welcome.

About the Instructor:

Debra Frances Plett is a book artist whose practice centres on sculptural book forms and material-driven processes. Trained in classic bookbinding, she earned her Core Certificate in Book Arts from the Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis and has further refined her practice through study with master bookbinders, alongside extensive self-directed experimentation.

Working with foraged and natural materials as well as traditional bookbinding techniques, Debra creates unconventional book objects that expand the physical and structural possibilities of the book form. Her work reflects a sustained engagement with materiality, craft, and process, resulting in tactile, three-dimensional works that move beyond the codex.
