CraftED: Goldwork Embroidery with Charlotte Sigurdson

CraftED: Goldwork Embroidery with Charlotte Sigurdson

Workshop Description:

Goldwork is a glittering golden style of embroidery that uses metal threads to create intricate designs. In this workshop we will be learning the basics of goldwork embroidery including familiarizing ourselves with the various types of metal threads and the techniques required to use them. We will learn how to prepare our design, how to couch and plunge gold threads and some delicate beadwork. Our design is inspired by traditional playing cards and features the four suits. Upon completion the design can be hung, framed or sewn onto another project. This project is appropriate for all skill levels.

About the Instructor:

Charlotte Sigurdson is a painter and doll artist, based in Winnipeg, Canada. Charlotte was born in Toronto and has lived all over Canada and in Europe, though her strongest roots lie in the prairies.

She began her artistic career as a doll maker, creating bespoke dolls for children. Over time, her work has evolved away from toys, but dolls remain a core aspect of her practice and a source of inspiration. Charlotte’s practice now includes oil and acrylic painting in addition to sculptural art dolls and other objects made from mediums such as wood, textiles, ceramics and embroidery. Charlotte had the opportunity to study goldwork embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework in the United Kingdom and now incorporates goldwork into her textile pieces.

Charlotte has exhibited her work in various exhibitions nationally and internationally including several solo shows.
