Exhibition at Latitude 53: Call for portfolios

Call for portfolios

Independent curator Mariana Muñoz Gomez seeks portfolios from artists who have roots in the region known as Latin America, are queer, and are based in or are from the Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba). Art practices may include and are not limited to the following artistic mediums: performance art, sound art, installation, video, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, jewelry, ceramics, and painting.

Working towards curating an exhibition in Fall 2026 at Latitude 53, Mariana is researching the following topics:

  • Identity formation among queer Latinxs* in the Prairies
  • Identity expression among queer Latinxs* in the Prairies
  • The impact of living in the Prairies on the identities of queer Latinxs*

*Mariana is approaching this project with the desire to get away from relying on terms including “Latin American,” “Latinx,” and their derivatives with the recognition that “Latin America” is a descriptor imposed on a vast, culturally diverse region. This umbrella term homogenizes and flattens identities throughout the region of Latin America, contributing to anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and systems. This call for portfolios is open to people born in the region known as Latin America as well as people from this diaspora who were born abroad.

Mariana will collect portfolios until the end of March. To share your portfolio with Mariana, email marianamunoz.art@gmail.com with the following:
