[Call for Volunteers] Jane’s Walk Winnipeg

[Call for Volunteers] Jane’s Walk Winnipeg is looking for Walk Leaders to lead community walks in the 2026 festival!
Jane’s Walk Winnipeg is back May 1 to May 3, 2026 and is looking for enthusiastic volunteers in the community to create and lead walks in Winnipeg as part of the international Jane’s Walk Festival.

Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by renowned urbanist and activist Jane Jacobs (1916-2006). On the first weekend of May every year, Jane’s Walk festivals take place in hundreds of cities around the world to encourage people’s exploration of their cities, to share stories about their neighbourhoods, and to discover unseen aspects of their communities. Jane’s Walk Winnipeg is hosted by the Winnipeg Arts Council and is citizen-led in a volunteer capacity. Walks can cover a wide variety of topics from historical landmarks, hidden gems, public art, to local lore, influential figures, and grassroots initiatives. A Jane’s Walk doesn’t have to even be a “walk” in the conventional sense of the word. It can be quite literally anything – a jog, a rollerblading event, even a biking event.

Winnipeg’s 2026 Jane’s Walk is occurring Friday, May 1, Saturday May 2, and Sunday, May 3. Volunteers are needed to lead walks in a neighbourhood, community, park, or trail of their choice anywhere in Winnipeg. If you have a passion for local history, architecture, public planning and policy, community building, or connecting with your neighbours to share stories about your favourite local spot, you can lead a Jane’s Walk!

Volunteering for the festival provides an opportunity to:
Create connections within the community over subjects you’re passionate about;
Exercise your creativity and have fun outside;
Introduce others to new ideas, concepts, social movements, or city spaces;
Add to a global movement that values interconnectedness and celebrates our cities’ people and vitality!

Warmly welcomed are volunteers of all ages and walks of life. No prior experience is necessary to become a Jane’s Walk Winnipeg walk leader! All that is required is a passion for your slice of the city and the ability to share your walk story with others. Walk length is generally between 45 minutes to 2 hours long and can be scheduled from May 1 to May 3. Volunteers can pick whichever day(s) suits them. Walks are also not limited to traditional “walks” – for example, in 2025, we had a walk leader organize a bike ride “walk” with about 10 cyclists. We are always open to unique walk ideas!
